notes on tracks 1-30
track 1: intro field recording; taking from my morning bus rides to work on the '33 balboa' muni bus in san francisco, in the richmond neighborhood. i recorded it on a simple sony cassette recorder.
track 2: prepared piano, vocals. 'from henry who just wrote' recorded at scott's in oakland. i overdubbed the piano and vocals. i used some random text i don't remember from. i was focusing on henry miller or anais nin or something.
track 3: turntable, magnified. yeah, i plugged the turntable, a pyle pro, direct to the board. i put the needle on the middle section on the label to get the gritty sound, and fooled with the pitch adj.
track 4: prepared piano, i was thinking john cage, but freeze the moment.
track 5: acoustic guitar; vocals. 'fate succeeds because it's obvious' this song was influenced by josef bueys readings, plus i had been listening a lot at that time to anthology of american folk music, plus scott had just told me that joey ramone had died and i kinda reflected and responded 'they're all dying, now'
track 6: solo acoustic guitar. i was really trying to play restraint, going for the 'ucross journal' approach but with a blues twist.
track 7: jackplug. the classic crackle and pop sound that chris forsyth and i had playing around with on tour
track 8: field recording (7th @ chester st/oakland); vocals in spanish. i did overdubs of the field recording and vocals. scott and i had had some problems early with outside noise. so i decided just to go with it and stick a mic out there to catch some of neighborhood. i wanted to create this ghostly mood with the vocals. i'm not sure what inspired me to sing in spanish, in retrospect things had been growing intense in my personal life that weekend. 'quiero llorar porque me da la gana, quiero llorar diciendo tu nombre' (i wanna cry becacsue i feel like it, i wanna cry saying your name)... i also really liked the car swishing by.
